To quote from the freerice.com website:
“Every night one out of seven people go to bed hungry.”
Freerice.com is an excellent website run by the UN World Food Programme where you can put your general knowledge to good use. It’s basically an online quiz but with the added bonus that for every question you get right the website’s sponsors pledge to donate funds to buy ten grains of rice for needy communities around the world. Some of the places where rice has already been donated include Haiti, Nepal, Cambodia and Bangladesh and as the website is non-profit and run by the UN you can be sure that your efforts will make a difference.
|Ten grains of rice isn't much on its own...|
You can also find on the freerice.com homepage details of the number or grains of rice raised in total the previous day (8,153,630 on the day of writing), as well as the grand total (currently over 95 billion grains donated to date) so you can follow just how big a difference the combined efforts of people around the world are making.
It seems appropriate to round things off with another quote from the freerice website. In freerice.com’s own words:
‘Hunger is the world's greatest solvable problem. The solution requires no scientific breakthroughs, no miracle medicine. We already know all that we need to know, to resolve the problem!’
